Understanding the Basics of Invisalign

Invisalign is a clear alternative to traditional metal braces. Rather than using metal brackets, wires, and rubber bands to adjust the position of crooked teeth, Invisalign uses a customized set of transparent, plastic aligners.

These clear aligners apply gentle pressure to shift the position of your teeth. Crafted from strong plastic, Invisalign is almost totally invisible to the naked eye, yet it still offers powerful orthodontic modification.

Using advanced 3D technology, Dr. Bianca Williams or Dr. John Ma at EaDo Family Dental will create a customized Invisalign treatment plan just for you. The plastic aligners are then fabricated based off this plan. Each Invisalign aligner is worn 20 to 22 hours a day for about two weeks. You should only remove the aligners when eating, drinking, brushing and flossing. After two weeks, simply change out your aligners for the next set. You’ll get a few sets of aligners at a time from your orthodontist during your regular six-week checkups. These appointments will ensure steady progress, and usually just take a few minutes.

The Benefits of Invisalign

There are numerous benefits to choosing Invisalign clear aligners over traditional metal braces, including:

Near Invisibility: This is the biggest advantage of clear braces. Unfortunately, braces do carry a social stigma, especially among adults. With Invisalign, patients can get straight, beautiful teeth without metal brackets. Invisalign aligners are almost completely transparent, so no one has to know about your treatment except for you.

Easier to Clean Teeth: Metal braces can make personal oral care very difficult. Not only are they bulky, they can also make your teeth very sensitive. Invisalign aligners can be removed to brush and floss, making it easier to take care of your teeth.

More Comfortable Than Metal Braces: The pressure applied by Invisalign aligners is said to be more gentle and comfortable than that applied by metal braces. Plus, there are no wires or brackets to poke or irritate your mouth and gums.

No Long Adjustment Appointments: These clear braces require no adjustment. Simply swap your old aligner for a new one, as recommended by your Houston dentist, and come in for a regular six-week checkup to make sure that you’re progressing properly.

Completely Removable: Since Invisalign is removable, there are no food restrictions. Traditional braces often require you to avoid things like chewing gum, sticky snacks and gummy candy, and hard foods like nuts. However, with Invisalign, you can simply remove your aligners, eat what you want, brush your teeth thoroughly, and replace them.

Cost and Treatment Times for Invisalign

The cost and treatment times for Invisalign are comparable to traditional braces. In some cases, these clear braces can actually work faster than their metal counterparts, especially for patients who require lower levels of orthodontic correction.

If the aligners are worn properly for the recommended 20-22 hours per day, the average treatment time for an adult is around one year. However, your treatment time may vary depending on your age, oral health, and a variety of other factors.

Invisalign is comparable to the price of traditional metal braces, but the cost will be entirely dependent on the needs to the patient. Consult with Dr. Williams or Dr. Ma for an accurate price.

Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign?

Invisalign can correct mild to severe orthodontic issues such as misalignment, overcrowding, gaps, and bite problems. Thanks to Invisalign attachments, Invisalign can correct severe malocclusions like underbites, overbites, open bites, and crossbites with the help of composite resin buttons that are bonded to the teeth, and elastics.

The attachment buttons come in various shapes and sizes according to the way a specific tooth needs to move. The purpose of the attachments is to anchor the aligners and assist them with achieving more complex tooth movements. When paired with elastics, they can shift the jaws forward or backward.

However, Invisalign has its limitations. Invisalign is not suitable for patients with large gaps, severe bite problems, teeth that need to be moved higher or lower in the gums, and teeth that need to be rotated past 20 degrees.

Invisalign candidates should be in good oral health without severe damage to their teeth. If you’re wondering if Invisalign is right for you, contact us at EaDo Family Dental today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Williams or Dr. Ma.

Are There Restrictions on What I Can Eat and Drink With Invisalign?

No, one of the unique benefits that set Invisalign apart from other orthodontic treatments like braces is their removability and convenience. Since the brackets and wires of metal braces are bonded to the teeth and cannot be taken out until treatment is complete, patients face many diet restrictions.

Food can damage or get stuck in the braces and it’s difficult to properly clean the teeth when the metal is obscuring a lot of the tooth surfaces. This is why many patients end up with discoloration and cavities after getting their braces removed. Invisalign aligners can be taken out at any time of the day so that you can eat and drink whatever you want.

You can also thoroughly clean the teeth since nothing is blocking your tooth enamel when you take the aligners off. However, it’s important to keep in mind that you need to always remove your aligners first and you should still be wearing them for 22 hours a day.

You will need to avoid frequent removal of the aligners which may mean reduced snacking. Brush and floss your teeth after eating so the bacteria and food particles in your mouth don’t stain or trap bacteria in your aligners.

How Do I Clean My Invisalign Aligners?

You should brush your aligners as often as you brush your teeth which is twice a day in the morning and night. Only brush your aligners with a soft bristle toothbrush and nonabrasive solutions like denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals.

After dipping the brush in the solution, scrub all of the surfaces of the aligners. Remember to brush and floss your teeth in the morning too. We recommend soaking them once a day in this solution for at least 15 minutes to loosen up and trapped bacteria or stains. Rinse them under water after cleaning them, but avoid exposure to hot water.

What can’t you do when wearing Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners have revolutionized the world of orthodontics, providing a discreet and comfortable alternative to traditional braces. However, while they offer a lot of freedom, there are certain things you shouldn’t do when wearing Invisalign.

Firstly, you should avoid eating and drinking anything other than water while wearing your aligners. Food particles and colored drinks can stain the aligners, making them less invisible and potentially causing issues with your dental hygiene.

Smoking or using tobacco products while wearing your aligners is also a no-go. The heat and chemicals from the smoke can warp and discolor the aligners.

Avoid chewing gum as it can stick to the aligners and become a cleaning nightmare.

Lastly, while Invisalign aligners are durable, they are not designed for contact sports. If you’re an athlete, it’s recommended that you remove your aligners during games or practices to avoid any potential damage.

How many times a day can you take Invisalign out?

One of the major benefits of Invisalign is its flexibility. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing. However, for the treatment to be effective, it’s recommended that the aligners be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day.

This means that you can take them out a few times a day. Generally, patients remove their aligners for meals and to clean their teeth, which usually amounts to about 2 to 4 times daily. Regardless of how many times you take out your aligners each day, the total amount of time you’re not wearing them shouldn’t exceed more than 2 hours per day. It’s also important to remember to put them back in as soon as possible to ensure the treatment stays on track.

What can Invisalign fix?

Invisalign is a versatile treatment that can correct a variety of orthodontic issues. It’s an excellent option for those with mild to moderate dental misalignments.

Invisalign can effectively correct overcrowding, where there isn’t enough space in the jaw for all the teeth to fit normally. It can also fix widely spaced teeth, where there’s too much space between the teeth due to abnormal growth of the jaw or missing teeth.

In terms of bite issues, Invisalign can correct overbite (where the upper teeth bite over the lower teeth), underbite (where the lower teeth protrude past the front teeth), and crossbite (where the upper and lower jaws are misaligned).

It’s important to note that while Invisalign is a powerful tool in orthodontics, it may not be the best solution for everyone. Severe or complex cases may require traditional braces or other orthodontic treatments. Always consult with a professional, like the team at EaDo Family Dental, to determine the best course of action for your unique needs.
