How to Prevent Stains on Your Teeth – Our Top Tips!

Over time, our pearly whites can become dull and yellow as a result of the natural aging process and the foods we eat. However, there are a few ways you can combat this process to keep your teeth sparkling and white.

Whether you’ve recently had teeth whitening treatment from EaDo Family Dental, or you’re just looking to protect your smile’s natural luster, here are some tips that will help prevent stains on your teeth:

1. Stop Smoking (Seriously!)

Smoking is the number one threat to your oral health. Smoking causes oral cancer, destroys your taste buds, stains your teeth and tongue, and increases your risk of developing gum disease. It can also delay the natural healing process of your gums and teeth.

Smoking is one of the leading causes of tooth stains, and there is nothing that can turn your smile yellow and dull faster than this habit. There are hundreds of reasons to quit smoking, and avoiding tooth stains is one of them!

2. Get Regular Teeth Cleanings and Oral Exams

Regular teeth cleanings can help you keep your smile bright, white, and gorgeous. A teeth cleaning keeps your mouth healthy, and can also remove plaque, which may pick up surface stains and lead to an unsightly appearance. Make sure to get your teeth cleaned at least twice a year for the best results!

3. Rinse Your Mouth or Brush Your Teeth After Consuming Certain Foods and Beverages

Unfortunately, there are quite a few foods and beverages that can stain our teeth. These include

  • White and red wine
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Dark-colored soda (cola, root beer, etc.)
  • Blueberries and other dark berries
  • Soy sauce
  • Beets

As a rule, if a food will stain your hands or clothes, it may also stain your teeth! If you consume these kinds of foods regularly, consider rinsing your mouth out with water or mouthwash after consumption or brushing your teeth to prevent stains.

4. Drink With a Straw

Certain beverages can stain your teeth and dull your smile, but you don’t have to stop drinking tea, coffee, or soda altogether in order to keep your teeth white. If you drink these beverages with a straw, the liquid will avoid contact with most of your teeth.

This means that your morning coffee and other drinks will be less likely to stain your teeth, so you’ll be able to keep your smile bright. You should also limit your consumption of acidic beverages like soda, coffee and tea to ensure your mouth stays healthy.
