How to Handle a Loose Tooth

A loose tooth can pose problems both in baby teeth and adult teeth. While children are supposed to lose their baby teeth at certain ages to make room for their permanent teeth, when this happens prematurely, it can cause the surrounding teeth to shift into the empty space and leave no space for the permanent tooth to come in.

In adults, teeth can be lost due to injury, gum disease, or tooth decay. A space in the gums poses similar problems of shifting teeth, which can lead to crooked and overcrowded teeth that change the facial structure. It is important to fill the space where a tooth is missing to prevent jaw bone loss and prevent the surrounding teeth from leaning into the space.

Treatment For a Loose Tooth

Tooth Splint – A tooth splint is used to support teeth that have been cracked or are loose and help to stabilize them. A splint is attached to the loose tooth and then the tooth is bonded to the adjacent teeth. In turn, the loose tooth is strengthened. Once your tooth is strong enough to be reattached, the splint can be removed, usually after a few weeks.

Extraction & Tooth Replacement – If your tooth is so loose that it falls out, then you will need to have the space filled in by an artificial tooth to prevent teeth from shifting. Dental implants are the only replacement option that prevents jawbone loss.

However, there are other faster and cheaper options such as dentures and dental bridges. If your tooth has not fallen out but is significantly loose, the dentist may call for an extraction and tooth replacement.

Gum Disease Treatment – If your tooth has loosened as a result of gum disease, then the gum disease will need to be treated. Deep cleaning in the form of scaling and root planing can make a significant difference and even reverse early-stage gum disease.

In more severe cases of gum disease, you may need soft tissue or gum grafts. The infected tissue and bacteria will be removed from the mouth through oral surgery.

Mouthguard – A mouthguard will protect your teeth from Bruxism and contact sports. Grinding of the teeth can wear down and weaken teeth, which can cause teeth to become loose. After addressing the root cause of your loose tooth and receiving treatment, you should invest in one of these if you play contact sports or grind your teeth at night.
