Certain procedures, like root canals or fillings and crowns, are pretty straightforward. But, when it comes to more complex dental treatments, you may not know what to expect. Such can be the case with dental implants.
If you are considering dental implants, but are not sure how long the treatment will take, then this article is for you!
The Dental Implant Timeline: A Quick Overview
The process of getting dental implants can take as little as a couple of months or over a year, depending on how many implants you need and your oral and general health.
Generally speaking, the following is what will happen.
The Initial Consultation
The dentist will examine your oral health and determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. If you have certain medical conditions, such as blood clotting, certain types of diabetes, or cancer you may not qualify for getting implants.
Pre-Implant Surgeries
Not all patients require pre-implant surgeries. If your oral health is in pristine condition, then you will probably skip to the next step. However, in some cases, patients may need a bone graft (if the jaw bone is not strong enough to hold the implant) or tooth extraction to make room for the implant. This step can take anywhere between two to 12 months, depending on the type of treatment you will require.
Placing the Implant
After the dentist ensures that your oral health is in good condition, they will place the implant into the jaw bone.
Healing
More often than not, the waiting periods are what makes dental implants such a lengthy procedure. The initial consultation and the placement of the implant can happen in the span of a few weeks, but after these steps, you will have to wait between three and six months for the implant to osseointegrate with the jaw bone.
The Abutment and Crown
After the osseointegration process is completed, the dentist will proceed to take impressions for the construction of the abutment and the crown. This process can also take a couple of weeks.
