Do Root Canals Really Hurt? Separating Fact From Fiction

Root canal therapy, also called a “root canal” for short, has been negatively portrayed in popular culture for decades. Root canals are portrayed as extremely invasive, painful, and uncomfortable.

If you believe what you’ve seen on TV commercials, sitcoms, in movies, and in other forms of media, you probably think that root canals are one of the worst things you can go through at the dentist.

But this couldn’t be further from the truth. In this blog from EaDo Family Dental, we’ll take a look at the facts about root canal pain, and dispel a few other myths and misconceptions about root canal therapy.

Root Canal Treatment Doesn’t Hurt At All – It’s Painless!

First, let’s tackle the most common myth. That root canals are painful. Like, really painful. That’s just not true. In fact, root canal therapy doesn’t hurt at all. During your appointment, Dr. Bianca Williams or Dr. John Ma will use numbing spray and injections to completely numb the nerves near your treatment site.

This means you won’t feel any pain at all throughout your procedure. We also offer some sedation options for patients who want to feel even more relaxed and comfortable during their root canal treatment in Houston.

You’ll Recover From Your Root Canal Right Away

Another common misconception about root canal therapy is that you need to go home to rest and recover for a day or two after your treatment, similar to a tooth extraction or another major oral surgery.

But while we definitely recommend taking it easy and avoiding exercise and heavy exertion after your treatment, you don’t have to do anything special to recover. Many patients choose to go back to work or school after their procedure at EaDo Family Dental.

And yes, your tooth may feel a little bit tender for a few days. But this will go away. Tenderness and soreness near the treated tooth usually occur when the tools used to clean out the tooth pulp irritate some of the nerves and gum tissue near the base of the tooth. If everything goes well, you won’t feel any significant pain or discomfort after your root canal!

Root Canal Therapy Is Less Painful Than Living With A Toothache

The most common symptom of an infected tooth is a prolonged, painful toothache. Toothaches happen because the nerve-filled pulp below your tooth is being attacked. The pulp is inflamed, decaying, and dying, which causes a lot of pain and discomfort.

In fact, the pain of a toothache can be so severe that it makes it hard to eat, speak, and live your day-to-day life. A root canal completely eliminates the pain and discomfort of your infected tooth, preserves it, and lets you get back to your normal, day-to-day routine.
