You might have also read that it’s possible to experience some bleeding after the surgery, but the question begs: how much bleeding is normal?
Mild Bleeds Are to Be Expected
Dental implants are made up of 3 elements:
- Metal post, which acts as the tooth root
- The abutment, which helps connect the post to the crown
- The dental crown, or the visible part of the implant
The surgery involves making an incision into your gum line and inserting the metal post to replace the missing tooth. After this procedure, you will enter the osseointegration stage, where the jaw bone essentially heals and binds to the metal post, keeping the implant in place.
Patients will usually experience minor bleeding after this surgery, as the gum line needs a bit of time to heal around the metal post. You may notice:
- Traces of blood around the implant or gum line
- A pinkish hue in your saliva
- Even a slight taste of blood in your mouth
However, bleeding should subside altogether in a few days. You can experience additional bleeding if you disturb the area by brushing harshly or eating hard foods, but your surgeon will provide more at-home recommendations on how to prevent this.
When Is Bleeding a Problem?
If bleeding doesn’t stop a few days after your surgery, and if you are noticing more and more blood in your mouth, it may be a sign that your implant needs more attention. You should reach out to your dental surgeon right away for an appointment.
Also, you might need to consider emergency dental services if bleeding is also accompanied by other symptoms such as:
- Swelling
- High levels of pain
- A fever
Though these cases are extremely rare, it’s best to monitor your condition post-op to make sure you stay on the right track healing-wise.
