Are Veneers Permanent? Answering Common FAQs About Veneer Lifespan & Durability

At EaDo Family Dental, porcelain veneers are one of our specialties. But if you’re thinking about covering up cosmetic flaws with veneers from Dr. Bianca Williams or Dr. John Ma, you may have some questions about the procedure, how long they last, and on other such topics. So read on, and we’ll answer a few top FAQs about veneer lifespan, care, and durability.

Are Veneers Permanent?

Technically speaking, veneers are not permanent, in the same way that no dental treatment is permanent. Your teeth and dental work undergo a lot of wear & tear over time, and that means that no treatment is completely permanent.

However, veneers are still a very long lasting solution for missing teeth. They usually last up to 10-20 years, and if a veneer is ever damaged or is worn out, it’s easy to replace it and restore your smile.

Can Veneers Be Reversed?

No. This is one of the reasons that people call veneers “permanent,” because the procedure does involve the permanent, irreversible removal of a thin layer of enamel from your teeth. If your veneers were to be completely removed, your teeth would be weaker, smaller, and more prone to decay and other oral health issues.

Will Veneers Weaken My Teeth?

No. As long as your veneers are in place, your smile and your teeth will be just as strong as they were before treatment, if not stronger. Veneers from EaDo Family Dental are made of very durable, tooth-like porcelain materials, and will keep your smile strong.

Will My Veneers Ever Stain?

No! This is one of the best things about veneers. They are completely stain-resistant, and will look bright and brilliant for years to come. However, this doesn’t mean you can neglect your oral care.

While your veneers won’t stain, the teeth that are not covered with veneers could stain, and stains could also develop on the parts of your teeth where your veneers attach to your natural enamel. So proper oral care and good lifestyle habits are still essential for preventing the buildup of stains.

How Can I Keep My Veneers In Good Shape?

First and foremost, continue to brush and floss your teeth regularly. Maintaining good oral hygiene helps reduce the risk of developing cavities, and will also keep your teeth, veneers, and gums healthy.

In addition to this, make sure to see Dr. Williams or Dr. Ma for a teeth cleaning and oral exam every six months. They’ll check on your overall oral health, and will also examine your veneers to make sure they’re in good shape.

You also may need to make some lifestyle adjustments to avoid damaging your veneers. For example, stop chewing on fingernails, pens, and other non-food objects. You should also never use your teeth to rip tape, open packages, or for other such purposes. We also recommend you chew hard foods like almonds and popcorn with your rear teeth.
